How to build a city around infrastructure? How is the modern city created? How does transport infrastructure influence the development of districts and the quality of life of residents? These questions will be answered by „Gdańsk Urban Talks” – a series of lectures for residents, implemented as part of „Open Lectures”, in cooperation with the City Architect's Office. The first meeting will take place on March 23.
„Gdańsk Urban Talks” is a series of educational meetings about how to build a better city around infrastructure. The project combines elements of an expert lecture, discussion, and workshop, creating a space for understanding the processes shaping the city and for actively involving residents in thinking about its future.
The meetings will be open to the residents of Gdańsk, and their aim will be to increase awareness in spatial planning and to show that the development of the city is a process based on dialogue and a long-term vision.
– This is a series about how a city is actually created – explains Michał Jamroż, project manager of Gdańsk Nowe Południe. – We see this very clearly today in two major undertakings transforming different parts of the city – Gdańsk Nowe Południe and Airport City Gdańsk. They show how infrastructure – rail and airport – can become an impulse for creating new, well-designed districts. We want to involve residents in thinking about this change and show how such processes really look.
The series is a continuation of the tradition „of ”Open Lectures", an initiative developed by the City Architect of Gdańsk, expanding it with new topics related to mobility, planning, and contemporary urban challenges.
– We want the conversation about the city to be accessible to everyone – says Piotr Lorens, City Architect of Gdańsk. – „Open Lectures” have been building a space for such dialogue for years. I am glad that the new series develops this idea, introducing topics related to transport development and the planning of large city areas, which will be crucial for its future.
The meetings will have a format of approximately 90-minute events consisting of three parts: a conversation with an invited expert, a short workshop for participants, and a summary and open discussion. In the workshop part, participants will be able to work on simple scenarios for shaping urban space, including using the LEGO® Serious Play® method. This will translate abstract ideas of urban planning or mobility into concrete experiences and models.
The „Gdańsk Urban Talks” series as part of „Open Lectures” is jointly organized by Gdańsk Nowe Południe (InvestGDA and Pomeranian Development Agency) and Airport City Gdańsk (Gdańsk Airport), in cooperation with the City Architect of Gdańsk.
A city of short distances. Future districts around transport.
The first meeting will take place on Monday March 23 at 6:00 PM in the HUBA space at 100cznia, intersection of Narzędziowców and Niterów streets. The guest will be Jeroen Dirckx, partner at KCAP – a Dutch company that, in cooperation with the Gdańsk studio A2P2 architecture & planning, is preparing the master plan for Gdańsk Nowe Południe.
The expert will talk, using examples from Europe, about how the ideas of transit-oriented development and 15-minute cities are changing the way modern cities are designed.
The second part of the meeting will be a mini creative workshop using the LEGO® Serious Play® method. Participants will build mini models that will answer questions related to the lecture topic.
